Gladstone Gardens // Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales
Brief: We were tasked with developing and creating two dynamic murals that captured the energy and history of the gardens. We drew inspiration from the surrounding areas which included local fauna and the sports grounds. The colour palettes were influenced by the locality of the space, mirroring the vibrant hues found in the natural environment.
A range of local flowers were stylised and arranged in formation to create our kaleidoscope mural. Paying homage to the park’s previous function as a blind park, we included uniformed circles through the design referencing the presence of Braille.
The abstract sports markings and textures depicted in the second mural mirror the dynamic and energetic nature of the various sports enjoyed in the park to create a visually captivating experience for visitors.
During the design process, we spent time facilitating a workshop with the pupils of Gladstone Primary School, studying the local nature, wildlife and fauna.
We also met with the residents of Golau Caredig, a care home adjacent to the gardens to speak with residents about their memories of the Gardens and what the space meant to them.
The murals were commissioned by Vale Of Glamorgan Council with Special thanks to Mererid Velios Arts councillor, Chris Page for design and editing footage.
